Events and Marketing Assistant


Griffin Books has a vacancy for a Events and Marketing Assistant based in our shop in Penarth, South Wales.

The role will involve supporting the Events and Communications Manager to:

  • deliver a busy annual programme of high profile and professional author events, including:
    • involvement in creative programming
    • liaising with publicists and authors
    • booking venues
    • preparing event materials and audience communications
    • creating marketing materials including digital assets, flyers, posters etc.
    • marketing events to a wide variety of audiences to drive ticket sales
    • book sales at events
    • setting up for events and event management (in a supporting role)
    • providing an excellent customer experience at all times

  •  build an engaging online presence for the shop, including:
    • creating, editing and scheduling posts across a variety of social media platforms (Instagram/TikTok/Facebook etc.)
    • creating newsletters (using MailChimp)
    • updating the shop website (Shopify platform)
    • day-to-day management and forward planning of the content calendar


In addition, supporting the business by:

  • providing cover for shop floor staff when needed
  • carrying out other tasks from time to time as directed


The successful candidate will be:

  • personable, with excellent communication skills
  • organised and methodical with good attention to detail
  • able to think creatively
  • a quick learner
  • comfortable using a range of social media platforms and IT systems
  • passionate about books and reading


Previous experience of bookselling is not required, but events and/or marketing experience would be an advantage. A clean driving licence and access to a car would be helpful for this role. Developmental and training opportunities will be made available.

The terms:

This is a full time position, though part time and flexible working requests will be considered. The role will require regular evening and weekend work at events in addition to Saturday cover as part of the staff shop floor rota (estimated 16 Saturdays per year).

Starting salary £23k based on a 35 hour week.

Griffin Books is a small but mighty independent bookshop located in the lovely coastal town of Penarth, just outside Cardiff. We opened our doors in September 2014 and in 2023 were named UK Independent Bookshop of the Year at the British Book Awards. In May 2025 we will expand the shop into the next door premises, creating a dedicated children’s department.
